Why Port del Comte

Port del Comte is the closest ski resort to Barcelona — just 150 km, well under two hours door-to-door on a quiet weekday morning. The resort sits in the pre-Pyrenean Serra de Port del Comte, before you reach the main Pyrenean ridge where Masella and La Molina live. Lower altitude (summit 2,400 m), smaller ski area (42 km of pistes), and a mood that locals describe as unpretentious and family-first.

What this means in practice: a shorter day. You can leave your Barcelona hotel at a quarter to eight — a full hour later than our Masella tour — and still be on the first lift up by ten. You can be back in Barcelona by half past six in the evening, in time for a proper dinner. For visitors on a short city break who want to taste a day on skis without losing the whole day to driving, Port del Comte is often the right fit.

The ski area

Port del Comte has 42 km of marked pistes — 11 green, 20 blue, 10 red and 1 black — served by 16 lifts. Most of the terrain is south-facing, which gives the resort a particular character: sunny, pleasant, with soft spring-skiing conditions by one in the afternoon on warm days. The upside is a sunny mountain day that doesn't require layering up like Grandvalira. The downside is that in a bad snow year the lower slopes rely heavily on snowmaking, and warm south-facing March afternoons can get slushy.

The resort has excellent beginner and lower-intermediate terrain. There's no snowpark, no FIS downhill course, no 1,000-metre descents — this is not a resort for serious advanced skiers. For a first-time Pyrenean ski day, for returning intermediates who want flattering wide pistes, and for mixed-ability families, it's one of the best in Catalonia.

Who the Port del Comte day suits

  • Short-trip visitors. If you have 2–3 days in Barcelona and want a ski half-day without losing a full day to driving.
  • Returning or hesitant intermediates. People who haven't skied in a few years and want gentle, confidence-rebuilding pistes.
  • Mixed-level groups. One partner strong, the other hesitant — Port del Comte has terrain for both and a small enough footprint that you can meet for lunch easily.
  • Older skiers. Shorter driving day, easier terrain, less altitude to adjust to.

Who it doesn't suit: strong advanced skiers wanting hard terrain and long descents; snowboarders looking for a park; anyone chasing deep snow conditions reliably (altitude is on the low side).

A Port del Comte day in practice

Pick-up is at a quarter to eight — the latest start of any of our ski tours. We take the C-16 motorway north for an hour, then turn off at Berga and climb into the pre-Pyrenean valleys for the last 40 minutes of the drive. The road is narrower than the main Cerdanya route to La Molina but genuinely scenic, with villages tucked into river valleys and limestone cliffs on either side.

Parking at the base is five minutes from the main lifts. Equipment rental and the lift pass office are in the same building — allow 15 minutes if you need to kit out, 5 minutes if you're carrying your own skis. By ten in the morning you should be riding the Cadí chairlift up to the mid-mountain plateau.

Lunch is at one of the three base-area restaurants — simple Catalan mountain cooking at about €18 for the plat del dia. Last lift down is at four in the afternoon, which gets us on the road back to Barcelona by a quarter to five, and dropping you at your hotel by around half past six.

How it compares to our other tours

Compared to Masella (our closest proper-Pyrenean option): Port del Comte is 45 minutes closer each way, has smaller ski area (42 vs 74 km), lower altitude (summit 2,400 vs 2,535 m) and a cheaper lift pass (€42 vs €56). The snow is less reliable at Port del Comte in bad years but the shorter day is a real advantage.

Compared to La Molina: everything La Molina has, Port del Comte has less of — but you also don't deal with La Molina's weekend crowds, don't need a Spanish motorway drive through the Cadí tunnel, and get home 90 minutes earlier.
